Minor Leaguers' Petition Seeking Spring Training Pay

Apr 29, 2022 3:24 PM

More than 1,000 Minor League players have signed a petition requesting that Major League Baseball clubs provide players with spring training pay.

The petition -- organized by Advocates for Minor Leaguers and submitted to MLB on Thursday -- follows a federal court ruling in March that said minor leaguers are year-round employees.

MLB has argued that minor leaguers are seasonal employees, akin to creative artists, making them exempt from minimum wage laws.

Damaged T206 Honus Wagner Card Sells For $1.5M At Auction

Apr 28, 2022 8:05 AM

A damaged T206 Honus Wagner card sold for $1,528,066 Tuesday morning after a 17-day auction.

The version is missing three sides, has been trimmed and wields a massive crease across its middle, but it still tallied 75 bids.

"The results from this auction speak to the ever-present and growing demand for Wagner cards -- which transcends the hobby -- in any condition," Brian Dwyer, president of Robert Edward Auctions, said.

"This card was [sold] in 2019 for $540,000; that buyer purchased it in 2012 for $198,850. It's exciting to see this card continue to rewrite the record books."

Carlos Correa Open To Long-Term Deal With Twins

Apr 29, 2022 8:26 AM

Carlos Correa has already expressed to the Minnesota Twins that he'd "love" to sign a long-term deal with the franchise.

Correa signed a three-year, $105.3 million deal with the Twins this offseason, but the shortstop can opt out at the end of this season and re-enter the free agent market.

“I told 'em, 'Hey guys, I know I have the opt-outs in the contract. But I really like it here,'" Correa said. "I love the people here. I love the way I'm treated here. ... I would love to have a long-term relationship here if that's what you guys would like."

Major League Baseball and the players' association will allow teams to have an additional pitcher on the roster for most of May.

Clubs may carry as many as 14 pitchers from May 2-29, a change the league said was "for player health purposes."

The sides had said March 31 that a 13-pitcher limit would be enforced starting May 2.

MLB Detailed Yankees' Illicit Technology Use In Letter

Apr 29, 2022 8:26 AM

An old letter sent by Major League Baseball to the New York Yankees and obtained by ESPN details illicit use of technology during the 2015 and '16 seasons that was relatively benign within the context of the sign-stealing scandals that occurred around the game at the same time.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Second Court of Appeals denied the Yankees' request to keep the letter under seal.

Manfred's letter contains information about technology violations that occurred before the commissioner issued a memo to all teams in September 2017, a mandate that was regarded as a benchmark in the evolving concern about sign-stealing within the sport.

The commissioner warned teams that he would hold the front offices and staffers accountable for violations, and that violators faced penalties that included the possible loss of draft picks.

Chris Bassitt Rips MLB After Mets Suffer Three More HBPs

Apr 27, 2022 8:33 AM

Chris Bassitt expressed frustration and concern for his teammates after three more New York Mets batters were hit in Tuesday night's 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, raising the club's major league-leading total to 18.

Bassitt blamed the baseballs, which he says are "all different."

"It's extremely annoying to see your teammates constantly get hit, and if you get hit by certain pitches it is what it is, but to get hit in the head the amount that we're getting hit is unbelievable," Bassitt said. "I had some close calls tonight, and I've been hit in the face [by a line drive] and I don't want to do that to anybody ever, but MLB has a very big problem with the baseballs. They're bad. Everyone in the league knows it. Every pitcher knows it. They're bad.

"They don't care. MLB doesn't give a damn about it. They don't care. We've told them our problems with them, and they don't care."
